The Evolution of a Change Agent

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

A new year often brings about a mindset of renewal; the proverbial “fresh start”. A new year’s resolution is a lot like starting a new personal relationship. It’s exciting…with many sleepless nights thinking about that person, wanting to experience more time with him/her. In time though, if we don’t continue to spend time with him/her and work on growing the relationship, the connection will eventually fizzle away. The same applies with reaching success for any resolution we set.

For true and lasting behavorial change to occur, there needs to not only be a resolution named, but more importantly that we’re willing to do the work in achieving it. If this resolve is not accepted, why waste the time and energy in the first place – as failure will most likely ensue.

Here are a few great ways to get you started on the road to becoming a Change Agent in your life.

OVERCOMING FEAR
This is a big one to tackle but understand that the primary key to change is the letting go of fear. As Dorothy Thompson put it, “Only when we are no longer afraid do we begin to live”.

Many believe that we live in a society that fears failure but after working with many people over more than two decades, I disagree. I truly believe that what holds many of us back is the fear of success. Fear is like a virus that can wreak havoc in our lives. It develops into mistrust, worry, anxiety, hopelessness, and other negative emotions. It can paralyze us and hinder our progress in life. It’s often the greatest obstacle to personal success.

TAKE DECISIVE ACTION – take small steps but with can-do mindset
Decide in your heart right now that it is time to evolve into the person that you are meant to become; that you are going to start to act like the success story you really are. With each small but bold step you take, you will be one step closer.

The power of taking action is limitless.

TIME to be STILL is ESSENTIAL
Having time to envision what change you want or how you might overcome whatever obstacles you are facing, is essential to helping you make the right decisions for your life. No matter the obstacle though, there is always an answer. We all have barriers in our lives. Having the time to be quiet and still in our thoughts and in our situation will allow clarity to set in.

Ghandi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”.

-Just start with YOUR world and see what happens-
