Don’t live on the sidelines but rather the sight-lines.

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

I have started this new year tapping into what makes my heart sing and really trying to see my life through fresh eyes. Having the courage to cut off and say no and fully embrace those things that matter most,  and releasing those things that are not serving me in my best interest.

Recently my youngest child was diagnosed with a rare eye condition. We had no idea that for the past 10 years of his life, that he was seeing double every time he tried to read. As a result, he has struggled so much and has had numerous issues with school and of course we were told ADD, learning disorders etc…when all the time it was his actual eyes that were the issue. In just one surgery, his eyes have been repaired and he is now able to see the world crystal clear.

This moment has highlighted a real lesson for me. How many of us think that we are viewing and living our life through the right lens? It is great to know where we want to go but I somehow think that sometimes the path that we think we have chosen to take to get there isn’t the right path at all.

Many of are happy to declare that we are in it for the long haul; willing to persevere and continue on the hard road of achieving success. Take a moment to see the potential from all angles. You might just be surprised at the clarity this will bring.  Finding out that in fact the road doesn’t have to be that difficult at all. So glad my sight has been restored …how about yours?

Clarify your vision to find your path to perseverance

Are you living your life deliberately?

… or accidentally?

“The more boundless your vision, the more real you are.”

Go find your way

Vision

Are you living your life your way?  Is your career what you want it to be? Do you look forward with pleasure to going to your office each day? Or is it with a feeling of dread, with the knowledge that this is something you have to do only to make money. Are you reaching your personal goals?  Are your relationships all that you’ve dreamed? Are you the one that’s in control of your life?

We all end up somewhere in life. A few of us end up somewhere on purpose – those of us with vision.  Life just happens to those without. Vision provides the direction necessary to guide the course of your days and the life choices you make. It is the light shining in the darkness that illuminates your way.

Remember that success rarely happens by chance, but rather by design. If you have no plan for your future, then you will fall into someone else’s plan.

A life lived with courage.

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

“Success is never final. Failure is never fatal.

It is courage that counts.”

Winston Churchill

Does your courage shrink or expand?

Courage

Contrary to what some of you may believe, courage is not an innate quality, but rather one that can be developed and cultivated.  When we develop courage we arm ourselves with the power and skill to confront problems and deal with adversity head on – a muscle that requires regular work-outs, one that helps us deal with life’s challenges.

The first step is to acknowledge and understand that courage is not the absence of fear.  Even the most courageous of us experience fear and trepidation – just ask any soldier who has had to venture into battle and few would deny that they felt deep fear beforehand.

Self discipline takes courage.

To tell the truth graciously takes courage.

It takes courage to be an example to our children.

To forgive takes courage.

It takes courage to make friends.

To be responsible takes courage.

To face pain and loss takes courage.

With courage you will dare to take risks, have the strength to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble. Courage is the foundation of integrity.

The Gift that keeps on giving.

Friday, July 29th, 2011

It can be lonely at the top at times.  As much as some semblance of control feels good, the awesome responsibility of leading others can at times prove to be overwhelming for some.  If you have ever experienced feelings of stress, loneliness, not feeling equipped or maybe you question how well you handle things, then maybe a leadership coach is for you. Someone, who can be there in the shadows as a support and a cheerleader for you as you navigate through the maze of figuring out your own leadership style; what works and what doesn’t work for you.

Can leadership coaching really lead to results?

Our hands on experience and research shows that it really can and does help to improve individual performance.  Think of coaching as four potential gifts you can give to yourself.

GIFT #1 – The GIFT of Understanding You. Coaching is about you and what the coaching process will do is give you a greater understanding of self and of contextual awareness. There is nothing more powerful than gaining insight about who you are and what you could be.

GIFT #2 – The GIFT of Understanding Others. The coaching process can help you to better understand why others might think and act the way they do. Having a coach to support you as you implement key actions for leading others can produce immeasurable long lasting positive for all involved and can really help to be a catalyst for positive change.

GIFT #3 – The GIFT of Becoming a Better Communicator As you communicate with your coach, you will not only learn valuable lessons on being coached but you will also navigate through problem solving, potential conflict and will learn ways to  improve how you convey what is important to you, to the business and to others.

GIFT #4 – The GIFT of Coaching Others One of the best ways to enhance your own ability to coach others is to be coached yourself.   Once you have experienced the value of coaching for your own development, you will be much more prepared to notice and leverage coaching opportunities with your team. This capacity will be a key differentiator between a good leader and a great one.

As with all coaching relationships, the only way to make it is a positive experience is through commitment. That is why leadership coaching is not for everyone. If you have no desire to change or grow and are not willing to work hard and make your development a priority, then coaching will be a waste of time and dollars. On the other hand, if you are ready for change, impact and terrific results and believe in yourself enough to invest in you future then coaching offers a tailored, focused way to connect your leadership development with your day-to-day work demands and impact your life in a way that could be transformational.

Overcome to Succeed!

Overcoming the topic of Image!

Image is everything!  Many of us carry around a self-image that doesn’t really jive with the facts. That can be devastating to our careers.  After all, how we look in our mind’s eye really determines how successful we can be in dealing with other people. For example, if you have an overly negative self-image – you feel that you’re too tall, or overweight, or unattractive in some way – you’ll lack confidence, and others will easily catch on. On the other hand, if you have an overly positive image of yourself – you think you look terrific, when in fact you’re a sloppy dresser who’s badly in need of a haircut – you’ll be blinded by a false sense of confidence and make decisions, actions, or statements about yourself that might lead people to question your professionalism …and even your sanity.

You are the Billboard for your Company or Business!

Like it or not, you are the “billboard” or face of your company or business.  So it is important for you to understand that you are selling YOU – first and foremost.  If you have a good sense and belief of whom you are and what you are offering, people will want to listen to you.  People trust people, not just products and services.  You are your biggest asset in the company.

Confidence sells!

Honestly take inventory of who you are.  Make a list of the pros and cons.  Where do you rock and where do you not?  Include the following:

-          Personal Hygiene – Do you have an updated hair style? Does your breath smell?  Do you have a white smile?  Are you clean shaven or do you wear appropriate make-up?

-          Dress / clothes style – Do you dress for success?  Are your clothes in style?  Do you wear what is appropriate for your business setting?

-          Image – Do you speak clearly?  Do you refrain from using curse words?  Do you give people eye contact when communicating?  Do you smile?

-          Attitude – Are you an open-mined person?  Or are you the “My way or the highway type?”  Are you Positive most of the time or do you see everything in a negative light?  Are you approachable?

It is important to be honest with yourself when you go through these steps in order to be successful in what you do.

Get an Honest Opinion

Ask your friends, family and associates their opinion of you.  Be open to what they have to say.  Making some adjustments to improve yourself will help you to overcome those barriers that may be holding you back.   Don’t delay – once you make these necessary changes – you will begin to experience success in all you do!

Clarity Breeds Consistency

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

It was a big wake up call for me one day only a few years ago when an esteemed business colleague asked me to sit down so he could understand what I do as a company.  Are you kidding me?, I thought to myself. I was running a very successful company and had served hundreds of clients and yet this wonderfully skilled and bright business person was unsure what our company did.

He was very aware that we had made impact in the community and that we had a very good reputation. He knew our people were top notch and that I, as the Owner, had enthusiasm and a passion for helping people succeed.  However, he still didn’t understand what we offered.

That question was a gift on that day. Here I was specializing in sales and marketing and helping clients build a stronger business and a better profile for themselves but yet somehow, I was missing the boat? I went away from that discussion with my mind racing, knowing that question most assuredly hit my PAIN spot.

“Clarity breeds consistency”
-Paula Morand

Although initially perceived differently, this was an issue I had been struggling with in growing my own company. In the midst of all the strategic planning, I realized it was time to re-invent ourselves. You see, giving yourself a TIME-OUT once in a while to re-invent yourself is essential.  This allows you time to not only review where you have been, as well as your strengths and weaknesses, but it also allows you to wipe the fog from your glasses…to really see what opportunities are out there for you to grab and what barriers might be in the way.

Don’t be afraid to hit the pause button once in a while – momentum is only good when you’re heading in the right direction.

8 Common Traits for SUCCESS

Friday, February 4th, 2011

A “720” is your fulfilled life – your way. It’s success and happiness, on your own terms. And LIVING 720 is you, actively taking that journey towards your dream; pursuing a life that has passion and purpose. Really, a life that is Unleashed for Impact.

After a fabulous interview with Richard St. John, author of “8 to be Great“, here is what I found out about the common traits of success people:

1. LOVE WHAT YOU DO: Find your passion, follow your heart and the money will follow.

2. GIVE IT YOUR ALL: Hard work is really the key in moving yourself forward.

3. PICK a LANE: Get on the road that is right for you and focus on becoming great at one thing.

4. PUSH through SHYNESS: Just because you lack self-confidence on the inside doesn’t mean you can’t be confident on the outside.

5. CREATIVITY is IMPORTANT: You can‘t come up with THE life-changing idea until you have practiced with a few thousand ideas. Learn to embrace the process.

6. PRACTICE makes PERFECT: The only way to improve is by repetition. Get good at what you do and then try and try again.

7. SERVE OTHERS: Adopting this philosophy will produce a boundless return. Put your ego aside and start serving others; you will be amazed at what happens.

8. PERSISTENCE is KEY: Success doesn’t happen overnight so don’t give up. Press onward to seeing your vision come to reality.

Sharing the Stage with Richard St. John

Monday, May 10th, 2010

There are times in your life when you meet people that just leave an imprint. This is one of those times for me. Over the past month, I have been travelling to a number of locations for the Entrepreneurship Expo. During this time, I have had the pleasure of sharing the main stage with Richard St. John, a self-made millionaire and Owner of the St. John Group, a world class marketing company in Toronto, Ontario.

What struck me about Mr. St. John was not his status, but rather his ability to remain humble. His new book, “8 to be Great” focuses on the 8 great traits that 500 of the world’s most successful individuals have. His goal was to share with others how simple it can be to overcome and gain success in one’s life. He spent 10 years conducting interviews all over the globe and capturing information as he set out on a quest to answer the question, “What makes people successful”.

What really impressed me though were his stories and experiences in meeting others and through his passion of running with his wife. He has summitted mountains, completed marathons and is simply focused on moving forward.

Great job Richard St. John! You are a winner in my book.
