I’m in Love with the idea of being in Love

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

A full day, full heart and feeling so blessed. That’s right. I was thinking about this and I really am.

Think about it for a moment.  You know those feelings that you get when you are experiencing something new or that certain someone that makes your heart beat faster and makes you blush. Well as I was thinking about this, it dawned on me.  Wouldn’t it be a wonderful pursuit to do things that will elicit those same feelings from all areas of life?

This is a year of adventure for me and I invite you on the journey with me.

A year of falling in love with my life. Of being totally released to the opportunities that await me without having any preconceived ideas about what it should be like. There is something amazing that happens when you choose to let go. Choose to allow yourself to start on a process of reinvention or of refinement. Whatever the word you call it, I am truly understanding that not having the game plan together all the time is a good thing. What I am constantly reminding myself of is that truly being thankful for everything…even the problems that I am faced to overcome is a gift. One that without focus and intention can easily be lost.  I for one am really going to start being more intentional about creating moments in my life that are worth remembering and my goal is do that every day.

Life is too short and letting it pass by me is not my idea of the love story of my life.

What about yours?

Lovin’ Life!

Don’t live on the sidelines but rather the sight-lines.

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

I have started this new year tapping into what makes my heart sing and really trying to see my life through fresh eyes. Having the courage to cut off and say no and fully embrace those things that matter most,  and releasing those things that are not serving me in my best interest.

Recently my youngest child was diagnosed with a rare eye condition. We had no idea that for the past 10 years of his life, that he was seeing double every time he tried to read. As a result, he has struggled so much and has had numerous issues with school and of course we were told ADD, learning disorders etc…when all the time it was his actual eyes that were the issue. In just one surgery, his eyes have been repaired and he is now able to see the world crystal clear.

This moment has highlighted a real lesson for me. How many of us think that we are viewing and living our life through the right lens? It is great to know where we want to go but I somehow think that sometimes the path that we think we have chosen to take to get there isn’t the right path at all.

Many of are happy to declare that we are in it for the long haul; willing to persevere and continue on the hard road of achieving success. Take a moment to see the potential from all angles. You might just be surprised at the clarity this will bring.  Finding out that in fact the road doesn’t have to be that difficult at all. So glad my sight has been restored …how about yours?

Clarify your vision to find your path to perseverance

Don’t Give Up

Find the road that is right for YOU.

Life can be challenging.  We make decisions that at the time seem like it is in our best interest or feels good, but in the end it has taken us away from where we are supposed to be. The good news is that each of us has within us the power of choice.  Choice gives us the opportunity to course correct the mistakes that we once might have made and to choose a different direction for the journey ahead.  The good news is that the journey is never in vain as there is always something to learn from every one of life’s experiences taken and not taken. The Road Not Taken – Robert FrostTwo roads diverged in a yellow wood,
… And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

The Gift that keeps on giving.

It can be lonely at the top at times.  As much as some semblance of control feels good, the awesome responsibility of leading others can at times prove to be overwhelming for some.  If you have ever experienced feelings of stress, loneliness, not feeling equipped or maybe you question how well you handle things, then maybe a leadership coach is for you. Someone, who can be there in the shadows as a support and a cheerleader for you as you navigate through the maze of figuring out your own leadership style; what works and what doesn’t work for you.

Can leadership coaching really lead to results?

Our hands on experience and research shows that it really can and does help to improve individual performance.  Think of coaching as four potential gifts you can give to yourself.

GIFT #1 – The GIFT of Understanding You. Coaching is about you and what the coaching process will do is give you a greater understanding of self and of contextual awareness. There is nothing more powerful than gaining insight about who you are and what you could be.

GIFT #2 – The GIFT of Understanding Others. The coaching process can help you to better understand why others might think and act the way they do. Having a coach to support you as you implement key actions for leading others can produce immeasurable long lasting positive for all involved and can really help to be a catalyst for positive change.

GIFT #3 – The GIFT of Becoming a Better Communicator As you communicate with your coach, you will not only learn valuable lessons on being coached but you will also navigate through problem solving, potential conflict and will learn ways to  improve how you convey what is important to you, to the business and to others.

GIFT #4 – The GIFT of Coaching Others One of the best ways to enhance your own ability to coach others is to be coached yourself.   Once you have experienced the value of coaching for your own development, you will be much more prepared to notice and leverage coaching opportunities with your team. This capacity will be a key differentiator between a good leader and a great one.

As with all coaching relationships, the only way to make it is a positive experience is through commitment. That is why leadership coaching is not for everyone. If you have no desire to change or grow and are not willing to work hard and make your development a priority, then coaching will be a waste of time and dollars. On the other hand, if you are ready for change, impact and terrific results and believe in yourself enough to invest in you future then coaching offers a tailored, focused way to connect your leadership development with your day-to-day work demands and impact your life in a way that could be transformational.

The Evolution of a Leader!

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

As long as there have been leaders, there have been those who have tried to determine what that secret ingredient is that ensures success. Leadership itself has not evolved, but our understanding of it has.  It is beneficial to understand varying leadership styles and how they can be effective and why the same leadership techniques will not work in every situation or for every leader. Finding out what your best “leadership fit” is will help you create a style of leadership that is unique to you. Think of it as your own personal leadership DNA. Similar to each one of us having our own unique DNA, each one of us has the potential to build, grow and refine our own leadership style and effectiveness. Taking some time to understand who you are and to study various leaders who inspire you will help you to mold a style that works for you.  Remember that being a leader is about leading others.  Very simply, how can you continue to evolve yourself so that you may do the same for those you lead so everyone is moving ahead and gaining momentum in a positive way.

We live in a world of increased competitiveness and the speed of change has created a new reality for leaders forcing change, growth, the way we process information, view the way we do things and the necessity of innovation to keep ahead of them game. Think of it as a constant reinvention of sorts.  This idea of evolution in leadership also brings with it the expectation and pressure to improve skills and to find innovative solutions to complex problems.  Not an easy task at the best of times.

Today’s leader needs to learn how to navigate their way around all of these perceived barriers while at the same time elevating their people to greatness and somehow learn to embrace that reinvention means evolution and evolution always brings innovation and change.

Leading People or Leading Work?

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

If you focus on your people, you will change the focus of your work.

In general, there are many managers who believe they manage their work. They answer is they don’t. The truth is that they are responsible for the work, but in actual fact they get the work done by influencing the people who do the work.

Management and leadership guru Peter F. Drucker highlights the following point. “When you hire a hand, it comes with a head and heart attached. So you must pay attention, lots of attention, to the whole person—head and heart—because you need more than your people’s time and attention”.

Work today consists of more than the need for knowledge.  In addition to knowledge it also insists on judgment, thinking, and decision making just to name a few. These essential skills matter and it is also essential in today’s marketplace that people care about what they do. You cannot simply give your people orders and criticism.  There is a growing hunger for playing a more important role in the impact that the work makes on the lives of the customer and of the people working for the company.  If you can tap into this, the level of engagement of your people will increase to a more positive and productive level.  To do this, managers should be cognizant of the fact that less direct but equally as beneficial forms of influence also lend itself to good leadership. These include approaches such as support, development, and encouragement.

Don’t forget that your people matter.  The work will get done so much faster if you learn to grow your people and delegate effectively.  Think twice when leading and remember that leading people trumps leading work each and every time.
