A Sure Fire Win for Impact

  |   confidence, leadership, motivation   |   No comment

I have had lived a wonderful rich life so far and have moved to many places, traveled to many countries and experienced meeting countless people across numerous cultures and ethnicities.  One of the skills that I developed when moving myself into new situations was in knowing that I always do better when I know where my fit is and who my tribe is.

One of the secrets to success has been to learn early on the importance of building community. For me, I never was one to wait to be invited but rather starting to forge my own path, build relationships through intentional connection.  I have developed this into one of my greatest gifts now.  The best way to combat my shyness and insecurity was to jump in and start getting involved and volunteering or special interest groups or classes can do just that.

Building your own community takes time. It doesn’t happen overnight but it does built momentum when you consistently put yourself out there to connect with others.

Here are a few ideas to get you more connected!

  1. Decide what kind of community of people you want to be associated with. (Your neighbourhood, workplace, skill or hobby related, sports, faith, cause, politics etc..
  2. Look for the influencers in that area. Those people who just seem to be out there and involved.  Reach out and invite them for a coffee and get to know them and their heart for why they love what they do.  Influencers love connecting and introducing people and are usually a sure fire win to open up your network quickly.
  3. Start your own thing (my personal favourite)  I have always thought that if I am going to put myself out there anyway, why not do something that I can help grow from the ground up.I have done this so many times now I look back and revel in awe at the sheer number of interesting networking groups, events, socials, cause related initiatives that I have started from idea to impact.

Community is all about aligning with something that is bigger than just you. It is the connection point to others that creates dialogue, friendship, caring and compassion.  Whether it is a church, community group, sports team, doing something that serves others along with yourself will help you find your fit.

And then it happens. That feeling that you know you belong somewhere, are being useful and making a difference.

Reach out, introduce yourself and take the plunge. You might just be surprised that the people you meet have more in common with you than you originally realized.
